3 Important Pool Maintenance Habits

After you have used pool financing to buy a new pool, it’s up to you to keep it well maintained. While pools are not difficult to keep up with, it is important to get in the habit of regularly maintaining your pool. In this week’s blog we discuss tips for keeping your pool clean and healthy.

Skim and Scrub

One of the most important habits to get into with your new pool is consistent skimming. Leaves and debris can quickly accumulate on the surface of your pool which are not only unsightly but can also rot over time and leave your pool water even dirtier. Simply getting into the habit of skimming will prevent many problems. In addition to skimming debris from the surface of your pool, it is also important to prevent algae buildup by scrubbing the walls of your pool. This task should be done 1-2x per month.

Take care of your filter

Pool filters play an important role in the health of your pool, removing impurities and keeping it clean. It is important to maintain your filter to ensure it is effectively doing its job. Luckily it’s easy to clean: simply turn off the filter, remove cap (located on the pool deck) , remove the filter basket, and clear out any visible debris before putting everything back into place. You should get into the habit of cleaning your filter basket a minimum of one a week when your pool is in use. You’ll also want to do a monthly cleaning of the pipes that feed into your filter system. This process is referred to as “backwashing” and is also a simple procedure: all you need to do is set your filter to the “backwash” setting, take out the leaf basket and clean it out, then turn on the pump and allow it to run until the waste water runs clear.

Give it a shock

If you notice your pool water getting cloudy it’s probably due to bacteria that you’ll need to get rid of. Shocking your pool means adding very high amounts of chlorine to your pool water to kill off any unwanted growth. While it can cause damage to your pool walls if done too frequently, your pool should be shocked at least twice per season
