How to Cure Common Indoor Pool Problems

indoor pool maintenance
Many people believe that outdoor pools require more work, because they are exposed to elements.  But indoor pools experience just as many issues, and need regular maintenance.

Enjoying your indoor pool while the weather is freezing outside can be a wonderful experience.  However, indoor pool maintenance is just as important as any other kind of pool maintenance.  Many people believe that outdoor pools require more work, because they are exposed to elements.  But the truth is, indoor pools experience just as many issues, and need regular maintenance in order to work properly.  Now that the time for indoor pool use is in full swing, let’s go over a few problems you may have to work out.

1. Shock the pool.

Public indoor pools require frequent shocking–sometimes up to 4 times a week–to really cut down on the risk of bacteria spreading.  The reason for this is bather load.  A higher bather load means more frequent shocking.  Even though there aren’t nearly as many people using your residential pool, it’s important to remember that shocking is necessary.  Shock your pool during the winter at least once a week for optimal results.

2. Regular ventilation.

Your indoor pool should always be surrounded by the proper environment, which includes adequate ventilation.  This can come in the form of windows, vents, fans, and other systems that can keep the air free of humidity.  Not only will this prevent mold, it will also stop that classic chlorine odor you so often smell in hotels and gyms.  Ventilation is an easy maintenance tip that should only take you a few minutes–open a few windows, turn on your fan system, and keep that air fresh.

3. Always clean manually.

Even though there isn’t debris you need to scoop out on a regular basis, you should clean your pool with a vacuum at least once a week.  You could also brush down the walls and floor on a weekly basis.  This breaks down biological elements that can grow and spread if left alone.  Without scrubbing or vacuuming, you risk algae and bacteria growth.  Gross!
