How to Find Out if Your Pool is Leaking

pool leaks
When your pool leaks, it can compromise everything from the pool’s foundation to the safety of your pool area. You’ll want to find and repair a leak as quickly as possible.

Do you suspect your pool is leaking?  This can pose a simple problem, or it can result in intensive repairs.  When your pool leaks, it can compromise everything from the pool’s foundation to the safety of your pool area.  You’ll want to find and repair a leak as quickly as possible.  But, before you can fix the leak, you’ll need to find it, first.  Then, repairs can begin.  Here are some easy ways to tell whether or not your pool is leaking, and if it is catastrophic.

Look For the Obvious

First, check around the perimeter of your pool for wet spots.  This is a strong indicator that your pool is leaking onto your pool deck.  You can also check the vinyl for tears or lacerations.  These are obvious leaks that you may be able to fix yourself.  If the tears are severe, or you notice that you have a serious foundation problem causing a leak, you’ll need to call a professional, and prepare for costly repairs.

Is the Water Evaporating or Leaking?

An easy way to tell whether or not your pool is leaking is to find a place on your pool lining you can mark off with tape where the current waterline is.  Checking back after a few days can tell you whether or not your pool is leaking–a few missing inches is way more than any water you would lose from splashing or evaporation.  However, mere millimeters may be harmless.

Where is the Leak?

In order to find out where the leak is, you’ll need to turn off the filtration system so the water is able to drop.  However, if the water level is dropping rapidly, you’ll need to stop this process; pools with vinyl lining need water in them at all times.  If the waterline stops receding after it reaches the bottom of the skimmer opening, it’s likely that’s where the leak is.  This is true for a light or liner.  However, if the pump is running and the pool is losing a significant amount of water, the leak is probably in the return line of the system.  If the pool continues to lose water with the pump turned off, and it moves past the light or skimmer, you may be losing water through the pool drain.
