Pick the Right Size Waste Bin for the Job

If possible, it will be cheaper to rent one large bin as opposed to having your smaller one picked up and replaced mid-job. Of course, some jobs simply require multiple dumpsters. But plan ahead so you don’t end up renting more than you need. 

The waste management company will help pinpoint which bins you need, but you’ll need to have a good idea of how much debris you will be disposing of. They’ll need to know the kind of debris you’re throwing away also, since certain things like concrete need to be disposed of separately. Also, heavy debris like bricks, shingles, and concrete have to be disposed in smaller 10-yard trash bins.

• 10-Yard Bin – Besides heavy items, you might get away with using a dumpster this small if you’re remodeling a small bathroom.
• 20-Yard Bin – This dumpster should work for large bathrooms remodels, tearing out a small to medium deck, replacing a smaller roof, or remodeling a small kitchen.
• 30-Yard Bin – This is a good size for a mid-size kitchen remodel or medium to large roof replacement.
• 40-Yard Bin – This bin accommodates most home remodels.

Estimating how many yards of debris you’re going to pull out of an old kitchen gets easier with experience, but here’s a simple formula to help. A pile of debris that is 3’ high x 3’ wide x 3’ deep equals 1 cubic yard. (That’s about the size of a kitchen stove.)
