Have you got someone with limited mobility in your family?  It’s important to keep your pool handicap accessible for them–everyone should be able to enjoy the pool equally!  In most cases, private pools in your backyard are exempt from the handicap laws that hotels and athletic facilities have to follow.  However, we understand that every family is different.  When you design a handicap accessible pool, you must comply to the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessible Guidelines.  Read on for some advice on how to make your pool more handicap accessible.

Wheelchair Lift

You’ve probably seen these types of lifts attached to stairwells and public transportation vehicles.  They’re motorized tracks that can lower a wheelchair user into the water, and vice versa.  These lifts can also be manually operated, and there are many different designs.  Seats even come in canvas slings or chair seats.  This way, you can customize your handicap access to your pool.

Sloped Entrances

Much like a zero-entry pool, sloped entrances are ways for a wheelchair user to roll into the water with ease.  There are actually aquatic wheelchairs that are meant for water use–using one of these, the wheelchair user can independently enter the pool without the need for a lift or for assistance.  This entry method, however, can be a little more expensive due to the renovation that may need to occur.

Stairs

Most conventional pools have stairs that allow for entry into the pool.  However, adding a handrail for these stairs allows for easy handicap access for those who many not need a wheelchair.  There are specific ADAAG regulations for these stairs, though; it’s important to do your research, first.  Regardless, designing your pool with handicap access is also going to increase home value; any prospective buyers will not have to worry about any adjustments they would have needed to make.
