Outdoor Spas vs. Hot Tubs: How to Choose
Are you installing a new pool in your backyard and thinking about installing a spa or hot tub? Lots of people choose to install a spa or hot tub along with their pool so they can cool down or warm up whenever they want. But which should you choose? Read our blog to learn more about the differences between outdoor spas and hot tubs, and how to choose the right one for you.
Outdoor Spas
An outdoor spa is usually attached to the pool and uses the same plumbing and other mechanical systems used by the pool. This is why so many people choose to have their spa installed at the same time as their pool. If the contractor is already working on the pool’s systems, they can easily incorporate the spa into these systems at the same time.
Spas usually start at $10,000, but the biggest factor in cost is the placement of the spa. A spa that is connected to the pool will be less expensive than one that is its own separate entity. Because the spa has a much smaller surface area than the pool, many homeowners like to deck out the spa with luxurious touches like a glass tile finish.
Hot Tubs
Hot tubs are not connected to the pool or installed in-ground. They are a separate, rolling tub that you can put on your deck or in your backyard on a concrete pad. Hot tubs need to be connected with dedicated wiring by a licensed electrician. In addition, you’ll need to consider whether your deck can bear the weight of a hot tub. A structural engineer can tell you if your deck can hold the weight of a hot tub. Hot tubs installed in the yard should be on a reinforced concrete pad at least 4 inches thick.
The biggest advantage of a hot tub is its price point. Hot tubs start at $4,000 or even lower, though it’s important to remember you get what you pay for. A quality hot tub that’s built to last should be your priority. Hot tub maintenance is more intensive than pool maintenance, as you’ll have to check the water and pH levels several times a week. Fortunately, maintenance is affordable, at about $100 per season.
