What Should You Do About Rust on Your Above Ground Pool?
The number one enemy of above ground pools is the rust that forms on both the side walls and the supports. The metal used in these supports, which is usually either aluminum or steel, can sometimes rust or corrode. When this happens, health and safety hazards present themselves in abundance. A rusty support pipe can snap and risk structural integrity, a rusty wall spot can flake into the water and contaminate it, and rust can end up destroying a metal edge, making it jagged and sharp. What can you do to solve these problems?
What Causes Rust?
Rust and corrosion are caused by moisture coming into contact with metals for a prolonged period of time. In particular, above ground pools can pose a direct problem because they are almost always in areas that will come into contact with moisture. If it isn’t the actual water within the pool, it’s the environment around it. Support structures could be rusting because they’re in very moist territory, surrounded by shadows and humid environments. Or, the water from the pool could simply be splashing out onto the supports without being given time to dry. However, knowing the specific reason you have rust on your above ground pool may not necessarily help you solve the problem.
What Should You Do?
Rust is a fickle thing. For the most part, in order to solve the problem, you’ll need some rust remover and steel wool. After you’ve rid the pipe of rust, you can then paint over the area to seal it. However, if you’re looking to prevent rust from happening in the first place, you’ll have to inspect your pool. There could be a stubborn leak that is a proponent of rust on your supports. Fix the leak first, not the rust, and make sure it’s what is causing the problem before you walk away. Make sure you do this with every component–check the skimmer, the filter, and the pump. When you’re leak free, it’s time to treat the rust. Likewise, you’ll need to ensure that the landscape surrounding your pool is ready to protect your pool from rust. Plants absorb excess moisture, and will make your job easier. Try to place your pool somewhere that isn’t in constant shade from the sun, as the sun will help dry the supports so that they don’t sit in moisture for hours at a time. Rust can destroy your above ground pool, so keep a close eye.
