Are you concerned about your pool filter this winter?  Regardless of where you live, even in winter, elements of your pool could have serious problems.  Because there are three main kinds of pool filters, it can be difficult to give just one solution when things go wrong.  However, it’s important to know if your pool filter is beyond repair, and needs replacing.  A pool cannot function without its filter!  In order to find out if your pool filter problems are catastrophic, read on.

Death of a Sand Filter

With sand filters, it can be easy for things to go wrong during the winter, specifically.  For instance, when a sand filter’s valves are closed or opened incorrectly, it can cause structural damage.  Rupture, cracking and snapping are common when this happens.  The tank can rupture, the connection ports (bulkheads) could falter and cause a backup, or a valve could snap from freeze damage.  During the winter, you’ll want to make sure you’re taking good care of your sand filter.  When the season returns, ensure that your filter is not broken beyond repair.

Irreparable Cartridge Filter

Now, cartridge filters can be very dangerous.  When these break, it’s usually because you’re doing something to adjust it–i.e., after winter, when you’re taking a look at it.  In particular, if the whole tank has frozen, the top can pop off with great force.  This is because the pressure behind it after being frozen causes it to break.  This is why it’s incredibly important to be aware of your pressure gauge.  And, if it looks too dangerous, get a new filter.

D.E. Filter Disasters

It’s a good idea to install a small roof or enclosure for your D.E. filter.  This will keep it safe from debris, winter storms, and other damages.  Make sure your filter clamps and filter itself are always up-to-date!  Older filters and clamps can become weak and break, causing the top of the filter to blow off.  Also, stainless steel can develop pinholes–this causes leaks in the filter, and requires a replacement.
