1. Animals

Even something like a deer could ruin your pool cover, especially if it’s low quality.  A slight dusting of snow could make it difficult for animals to discern where cover begins and ends.  In unfortunate cases, bears or elk may walk across the dangerous cover.  Not only will this destroy your cover, but it could also harm these animals.

2. Ice

Ice isn’t actually what causes the damage–it’s the act of removing it.  If ice gathers on your pool cover, regardless of the material, never try to get rid of it.  Melting the ice can cause damage to your cover, and trying to crack the ice could backfire and instead crack the cover.  Simply let the ice sit–it will thaw overtime and cause no harm.

3. Trees

Bad ice storms could break off pretty heavy branches from trees, which will fall onto your pool cover and crack or break it.  Make sure the area above your pool is clear of foliage and doesn’t pose any danger, should there be a particularly heavy load of snow or ice.  Sometimes, removing a tree entirely is better than keeping your pool vulnerable to this danger.
