Get Creative in Your Comfort Zone
You don’t have to choose a bold red or turquoise to show your creative side. If your favorite space is more in the neutral zone, find ways to do something different with neutrals. Rather than a solid beige wall, add white or cream stripes. It adds character while staying in a color scheme you’re comfortable with.
Sample Savvy
You found the perfect color. You made the commitment and bought enough for the entire project. Now it’s on the walls and, well, you’ve lost that loving feeling. The easiest way to avoid this is by using samples. Take home a small container of your top three color options. Put a decent sample size on the wall of each (be sure to label them if they’re similar shades so you don’t forget which is which) and take a day or two. This allows you to see those colors from sunrise to sundown and how they might change based on brightness or lighting.
You can do this for your home’s exterior as well. Pick an unassuming spot where you can try out your samples. Then, try to imagine your entire home in that color and determine if you still love it enough to commit. That yellow hue might look gorgeous and funky on a sample swatch, but applied to your entire home it could take on the look of a giant canary.
Paint Style Selection
It’s important to remember the type of paint and the sheen of the paint you select, as well. Think about where this paint is going. The exterior of your home? Be sure to select a durable paint for home exteriors. For interior paints, determine the sheen based on the room you’re painting. For instance, high-traffic areas such as hallways, the kitchen or bathrooms will see lots of messy hands, especially if you have small children in the house. Your paint should have a sheen that will allow easy clean-up.
