Cleaning your pool is one thing, but anyone who has owned a fish tank knows algae is difficult to get rid of.

If you’ve ever seen that tell-tale green start to form within your pool, it can be daunting.  Cleaning your pool is one thing, but anyone who has owned a fish tank knows algae is difficult to get rid of.  It grows and spreads at an alarming rate, and can sometimes overtake your pool before you really notice it.  From there, either out of misuse or mistreatment, your pool can become a green, murky mess.  Read on to figure out how to avoid it.

  1. Use an algaecide.

Applying this treatment regularly before algae growth can make sure it stops before it starts.  Algaecide is specifically designed for pools, so it’s safe for humans but deadly for green blooms.  Adding this to your chemical routine, while following the directions on the algaecide container, will ensure that algae never grows.

  1. Get rid of phosphates.

There should be a phosphate level indicator when you conduct your pool water tests.  Eliminating phosphates means there will not be fertilizer to help algae spores grow.  Phosphates come from oils, leaves and other living debris, so getting rid them can cull algae growth to a very high degree.

  1. Clean your pool regularly.

Using a scrub brush and a vacuum may seem excessive and over the top, but it can be the most reliable way to get rid of algae blooms.  Chemical treatment is important, but you should also be getting in there to scrub away at your pool liner.  Don’t use anything with rough bristles, as they can cause damage to your lining.  Instead, a soft brush with a cleaning solution is probably the best way to go.  You don’t have to do this every day.  Once you’re done scrubbing, let a pool vacuum run over the bottom to pick up any spores that have settled.

  1. Do chemical treatments often and consistently.

You should already be doing this, but this ensures that algae won’t grow.  Chemical treatments are a must if you own a chlorine pool.  It’s often the only way to keep your pool in good condition.   Keep up with these routines, and your pool should be good to go!
