Fall is only a month away! Time really does fly–it probably feels like you just opened up your pool last week. But now that fall is on its way, it’s time to start getting ready to close down your swimming pool for the season. While fall does offer a few warm days that may be great for swimming, you might decide to keep it open a bit longer than usual. That’s fine–as long as you follow these simple steps.
- Clean and Store Accessories
Before you throw those pool noodles into storage, think about what they could be harboring. Wet pool noodles are perfect breeding grounds for bacteria. And that goes for all of your pool toys; you’ll need to make sure you’re taking the proper care to sanitize them. After you’ve done that, make sure they’re fully dry before storing them.
- Test Water Quality
Even though it won’t be in use over the winter, your pool’s water needs to be in top shape to last the whole season. That way, you won’t have to deal with as much algae and water control when your pool opens up again in the spring. Also, be sure your pool is free of debris and leaves. Decaying leaves will cause problems for your water quality.
- Lower the Water
This simply makes it easier on you when you want to close the pool. Lowered water levels make the cover fit better, and when you cover the pool, you want as little hassle as possible. Your cover should also be properly cared for and maintained throughout the year–if it has been ignored, you may want to consider investing in a new one.
