Owning a pool isn’t all about fun and games–sometimes, you have to think very seriously about safety.  Especially with small children around, it’s very easy for someone to slip and fall into a pool without knowing how to swim.  There’s also the issue of slippery surfaces, which can end up causing serious injury.  There’s a reason there are lifeguards at public pools!  How safe is your pool?  And how can you make it safer?  Read on to find out.

Safety Covers

This is doubly useful if you have to close your pool for the season.  Your pool, even with a conventional cover, becomes standing water that anyone could fall into.  Small children may not see the cover and could fall in, which spells disaster.  A safety cover allows you to walk across the surface of your pool without concern, so you know it’s not possible to fall in.  They’re a little more expensive than conventional covers, but well worth it for the safety they bring.

Pool Alarms

You can place pool alarms just about anywhere.  They come in many forms, as well; perimeter alarms tell you whenever a child or pet enters the area of the pool unsupervised.  Gate alarms let you know when someone opens the gate to your pool.  There are even wearable alarms that tell you when a child is submerged in water.  There are so many options, that it’s unwise to forego the option.  While multiple alarms are a better idea, even one will be better than none at all.

Safety Equipment

Most public pools have safety equipment, such as life savers or a safety hook, that are required in the event of an emergency.  The same should be done for your private pool. Have a life saver on hand and ensure that there’s a rope attached to it.  Safety hooks are relatively cheap and are easy to obtain, so even this small security assurance will help in the event of a safety issue.
