And even though the winter isn’t quite over yet, it’s important to discuss this very important process so you can prepare when Spring rolls around. Acid washing is quite the project. It takes a bit of effort and money, so you should get yourself ready before the process creeps up on you. Here’s how you should give your pool a proper acid wash.
Why Acid Wash?
Over time, if chemicals are imbalanced, algae will start to bloom in your pool water. This can create the effect of your pool going green, or even black if it’s let go for long enough. It also attracts pests, like bugs and animals. Plus, who wants to swim around in green water? An acid wash is essentially when you are purposefully stripping away a layer of plaster from your pool in order to make it look brand new. Because this process is doing damage to your pool, it shouldn’t be done too often. But, once in awhile, it can make a world of difference!
The Process
An acid wash is a pretty simple process, but it is time consuming. First, you’re going to want to drain your pool completely of water. This is going to entirely eliminate algae blooms, and will also allow you to clear out the bottom of the pool. Removing leaves and debris is the first step towards preventing organic growth in your pool. Next, mix 1 gallon of acid with 1 gallon of water. Dress yourself in protective gear, as acid is a very dangerous substance! In small sections, pour the mixture down the walls of your pool. After about 30 seconds, you can rinse off the acid with water. It’s important that you remove all the acid from the walls, as it will continue to eat the plaster and will eventually damage your pool. Work your way around the pool, until the entire thing is cleaned. At the end, use 2 pounds of soda ash per 1 gallon of mixture to neutralize the acid pool that has gathered. Rinse, rinse, rinse before you fill up your pool again. Remember: protective gear is vital. Acid can burn, especially if it comes into contact with your eyes. Safety goggles, respirators, gloves and close-toed shoes are imperative. The total cost of an acid wash is usually between $600-$1000.
