How to Advertise Your General Contracting Business

Like it or not, advertising your general contracting business is just part of the job. Getting leads translates to success and long-term growth — and marketing your business is a key cog in the wheel. But don’t worry, you don’t have to become a marketing whiz in order to advertise yourself. Here are a few simple, but effective ways to advertise your general contracting business!

Get Social

Maintaining a social media presence doesn’t take a ton of effort. It’s inexpensive, but it can make a real impact on building your brand recognition. When you think of business on Facebook, you probably picture retail stores and brands marketing specific products and specials, which doesn’t usually apply to your business. But you don’t need to hock a product to take advantage of social media marketing!

Instead, focus on showcasing the personality and quality of your company. Of course, posting pictures and updates on job sites is a good way of marketing your home improvement business. But you don’t have to keep things strictly work-related. Share funny memes that tie into your business or community (but steer clear of politics, religion, or anything else that might be polarizing). Share pictures from the company dinner or softball game. Highlight your employees (a post praising them for a job well done, an interesting fact about them, etc.). Post a picture of the stray cat that’s been coming around lunchtime every day to munch on fallen french fries… You get the idea!

Being active on social media will help you build trust and presence in your community. Then, when someone needs work done around the house, they’ll just happen to think of you, of course!

Build an Email List

A weekly or monthly email blast to your leads and former customers is a great way to stay in contact with your leads/clients and it’s pretty easy to do. MailChimp and other email marketing services offer free plans that allow you to post a signup form on your website and make it simple to manage your email list.

Not sure what you’d talk about in a weekly or monthly newsletter? First, anytime you are running a special, you can email it to all your leads at once. Most of the time, though, we recommend using those emails to offer helpful information to homeowners, thereby making yourself their go-to expert and building your business’s reputation. Offer helpful tips for preparing their homes for the first freeze of the year. Give advice about which plants are best in your local zone and when to plant them. Give tips about organizing the shed, sealing the deck, power-washing the driveway, or picking paint colors. Share a little bit of your wonderful knowledge on all the topics you’re an expert in.

Stay Active in Your Community

Effectively marketing your contracting business can be as simple and rewarding as being a vital part of your community. Sponsor t-shirts for a little league team every year. Go to seasonal festivals and outdoor concerts and offer small promotional products. Get your team together to walk in the Christmas parade and pass out branded rulers, carpenter pencils, or magnets.

These are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to marketing your contracting business. From Facebook ads to email blasts, there are a thousand things you could do. Just remember to be consistent with updating your website and social media posts to keep your brand presence high. Need more ideas about marketing and growing your home improvement business?
