What You Should Know About Algae and Your Pool

Algae
Dealing with algae in your pool? Here’s how to get rid of it and prevent it from becoming an issue in the future.

Anyone who owns a pool has likely seen the water turn green at some point. Whether it happens once every few years or even monthly, it’s apparent that owning a swimming pool requires a good deal of maintenance. Sure, much of that maintenance may be optional, but if you want to never deal with algae again, it’s important that you take care of your pool thoroughly. If left unchecked, algae can build up and cause serious health risks. We want to take a look at what algae can do to your pool, why it’s a problem, and what you can do about it.

What Are Algae?

Algae are tiny little organisms that can build up and multiply on your pool liner. While algae alone aren’t harmful to humans, they sure are slimy and gross. Their waste products, on the other hand, can actually cause a negative impact to your health. It begins to attract bacteria which can cause infections or other diseases. While health may and should be your number one priority, there’s also the fact that algae can make your pool water look unsightly and reduce the overall aesthetic value of your investment.

How Can You Prevent It?

The most important part of preventing algae growth is keeping chemical levels balanced. Buy a pH testing kit and follow all of the instructions closely. Beyond that, doing regular cleanup is always important. Scrubbing and vacuuming your pool can help keep algae away and make your pool look clean for a long time. Actually using your pool often and swimming around can disrupt the growth of algae, too, so maybe it’s time for you to enjoy your pool a bit more than you currently do!

How Can You Remove It?

You’re going to want to test your pH once algae begins to grow and adjust accordingly. You also want to manually clean everything, this means using long-arm brushes to scrub everything down. Shocking the pool is a necessity as well so be sure to follow the instructions on the bucket that your shock came in. Even after you feel you’ve done a good job cleaning everything, you’re going to want to continue a regular cleaning schedule to ensure nothing comes back.
