The Basics of Pool Lighting

The Basics of Pool Lighting
Adding pool lighting can create new possibilities for how you use your pool

Swimming at night is one of the world’s greatest joys, yet doing so requires you to think about safety and being able to know what your surroundings look like. That’s one reason that pool lighting is so important. Another is that it adds some aesthetic depth to your pool’s design and can make it stand out even when the sun is down. Now’s a good time to start thinking about pool renovations, new pool installations, or even just additions like pool lighting. Adding pool lighting can create new possibilities for how you use your pool, which is why we’ve come up with a few ideas you should familiarize yourself with before installing lights.

Why Install Pool Lighting?

The most obvious reason as to why you’d want to install pool lighting is to make the area safe. If you’re going to enjoy your pool at all hours of the day—even when there’s inadequate sunlight—you’re going to need to have enough lighting that you have a safe swimming situation. It’s also a matter of being able to enter, exit, and walk around the pool safely. The areas around pools, no matter what materials are used in the construction, are always going to be safety risks. Safety is typically the top reason that new pool owners install pool lighting, but the benefits don’t end there.

Beyond keeping everyone safe, there’s that element of design, too. Lighting offers you an opportunity to show off your style. Think about what colors strike you the most, or how much lighting you enjoy having around your home at night, or what different kinds of bulbs can offer you.

Lastly, having lights installed can be a security measure. If you have any concern whatsoever of anyone using your pool when you’re not around to keep an eye on it, pool lighting can help deter anyone who may be hopping fences and trying to take advantage of someone else’s private pools. They also contribute to a general sense of home security and discourage potential criminals.

What Are Your Options?

As far as what options there are, it’s just about limitless. Think about all the string lights, outdoor lamps, torches, LED lights, and more traditional outdoor lights you’ve seen on the market and consider how those may be used to light your pool up at night. There are also lights you can install inside your pool, which are typically either LED lights or more traditional lamps. You’re going to want to have adequate coverage, though, which means installing lights in both the shallow and deep ends.
